Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in Dental Implant Industry

The dental implant is an effective method for replacing lost or damaged adult teeth. This procedure involves implantation of a metal post in the jawbone in place of a missing tooth. The implant is then covered with an artificial tooth to give your smile a natural appearance. Implants are strong enough to withstand chewing and eating.

In recent years, climate change has become increasingly apparent in healthcare, affecting infrastructure, economics, and public health around the world. As a result, healthcare's contribution to environmental sustainability is becoming a growing field of study. As opposed to traditional dentures, dental implants have less ESG impact. While traditional dentures are among the oldest treatments for missing teeth, they are less expensive, but they can affect your taste, ability to eat or drink, and ability to communicate.

There is also an increasing demand for dental implants because of an increasing number of dental injuries caused by road accidents and sports injuries. World Health Organization (WHO) data indicates that nearly 10 million people are injured or disabled each year because of road accidents. There was a slight setback in the dental industry during the second and third quarters of 2020 because of supply chain bottlenecks and the closure of dental clinics caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, after the second quarter of 2020, dental procedures resumed, leading to a full recovery by 2021.

ESG Challenges And Trends

Although dental implant has less negative effect on ESG when compared to traditional dentures but still it is associated with risks. There is a major risk of sinus damage associated with dental implants. The upper jaw is directly under the nasal sinuses. Implants to replace the top teeth may penetrate the sinus and cause discomfort or infection. A dental implant surgery can cause infection and nerve damage. Nerve damage can last a lifetime. Implant placement can affect the teeth around the implant. If adjacent teeth suffer from minor problems like decay or root damage, oral surgery can make the problems worse.

There is also the risk that many dental implants are made of titanium. Thus, it is important to understand how titanium affects the body. Titanium implants can wear out and corrode slowly over time, resulting in titanium alloy particles deposited in the body. While rare, this can result in yellow nail syndrome or other health problems.

The delivery of health care is not economically, socially, or environmentally sustainable due to high CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) and waste generation. Oral health care has previously focused solely on providing optimal patient care, without considering the environmental impact. However, as society, government and industry become increasingly aware of the need for sustainability, this is changing.

The use of animals in dentistry is primarily in periodontal and peri-implant research to test the performance of dental implants. Animal models are commonly used to test the biocompatibility of new materials before they are applied in humans for periodontal and dental implant research.

The morals and ethics of animal testing have been improved by using superior and humane non-animal methods instead of harming animals in dental colleges in India. These methods include cost-effective computer-assisted learning models, clinical exercises, and human patient simulation technology, all of which are already commonly used in top medical schools worldwide.

A dental implant has its risks, as does any medical procedure. The question is whether or not it's worth it to you based on what's important to you. For some people, gaining more confidence, having natural-looking teeth, and being able to eat all of their favorite foods outweighs the very small health risks associated with titanium.

Growth of the Dental Implants Market

In 2022, USD 4.6 billion was the value of the global dental implants market, and from 2023 to 2030, it is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.8%. There are a number of key factors expected to boost the industry's growth, including the increasing use of dental implants in a number of therapeutic areas and the increasing demand for prosthetics. By using prosthetics, oral rehabilitation helps restore a patient's oral function and facial form, which in turn propels the demand for these implants. The acceptance level for dental implants among patients and dentists is increasing as removable prosthetics are uncomfortable, lack a natural appearance, and require frequent maintenance.
