Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) in the False Eyelashes Industry

With eyelash extensions, eyelashes look like mascara-less without applying mascara. Eyelash extensions are a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of natural lashes when applied properly by a licensed and trained professional. When applied incorrectly or with the wrong adhesive, they can cause discomfort, infection, and permanent loss of lashes.

A key objective of ESG is to help stakeholders understand how an organization manages risks and opportunities relevant to sustainability. False eyelashes effect the health of people and the environment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks have become an essential daily protective measure, and since they cover the entire face except for the eyes, they are now necessary everyday protective measures. For false eyelashes lovers, this is a great boon, as the eyes, the only part of the mask that shows, have become the center of attention.

ESG Risk

False eyelashes are made from plastic. The growing demand for false eyelashes is harming the environment. A synthetic chemical plastic material is used to make these false eyelashes. Chemical pollutants have a negative impact on marine wildlife, contributing to the overall problem of species extinction and environmental destruction.  They take up land, water, and energy, and contribute to deforestation. The use of false eyelashes also leads to pollution of rivers, streams and oceans by chemicals used in manufacturing them.

False lashes made of plastic and cannot be recycled, which has a negative impact on our planet's resources. Plastic can cause harm to animals and humans when ingested by animals or washed down the drain into waterways where it causes pollution. The plastic packaging used for these false eyelashes also end up in waste creating landfill.

Apart from environmental impact these false eyelashes also have potential risk or side effects to the skin. In the process of applying eyelash extensions to the lashes, adhesives and ingredients can cause irritation or harm to the consumer. If a reaction occurs to a chemical, side effects may appear within two to three days.

As well as causing temporary or permanent loss of real eyelashes, fake eyelashes may also damage the hair follicle and also damage the cornea. Taking them off can damage the hair follicle and even damage the hair shaft. Wearing fake lashes is not the most hygienic practice. The lashes accumulate dirt and bacteria in one of the most sensitive organs of the body, leading to serious health complications.

In addition to the environmental and health risks of these eyelashes, they can also be expensive. The cost of your eyelash extensions will depend on where you live and what the extensions are made of. Mink lashes are usually the most expensive.

ESG Trends

In recent years, the eyelashes market has been focusing on products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable without compromising on quality. False eyelashes have an environmental impact that cannot be eradicated, but it can be reduced if you use natural eyelashes. Mink and sable fur lashes are biodegradable but are made from animals who are killed for their fur, so they are neither cruelty-free nor vegan. The best option for eco-friendly lash extensions is silk lashes, which are 100% biodegradable and made of real silk. Nonetheless, they are expensive and hard to find.

In 2020, chemists worked together on degradable eyelashes and extracted fiber from plants, making it into false eyelashes. As part of the ecological concept of sustainable development, plant fibers will continue to be renewable, contact with the skin will not cause harm, and natural degradation will follow. The appearance is not different from other eyelashes, but its band is thinner and softer than PBT eyelashes, so it could decompose in the environment without damaging it.

As a replacement for plastic, new biodegradable eyelash covers are made of sugarcane pulp. These products are also cut-resistant to provide the maximum durability, making them more durable than plastic or polystyrene.

Growth of False Eyelashes Market

A global market for false eyelashes was valued at USD 1.1 billion in 2018, registering a 5.4% CAGR. These products have become increasingly popular among consumers of all ages for temporary, permanent, regular, and occasional use. It is predicted that the market for false eyelash extensions will grow due to an increasing demand for personalized and unique looks in makeup. When selected correctly, false eyelash extensions can be a powerful tool for changing one's appearance and can have a transformational effect on one's appearance. It has been observed through our analysis that eyelashes do have a significant impact on the environment. An alternative approach that can be followed by the consumer is to select for the process where they can make their own lashes longer by using eyelash serum instead of using extensions.
