Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) in Frozen Pizza Industry

Today’s fast paced lives have modeled our personal habits like- eating, sleeping etc. Therefore, a newfound fondness can be seen for procedures that can bypass old school, time consuming and detailed ways of leading life. Requirement for food is undeniable and with fast paced life lot of significance is given to convenience. Therefore, multiple product lines of frozen foods have flourished over the years. One such product line is of frozen pizza. Out of many reasons behind increased consumption, pizza’s popularity lies in the fact that it is a staple for many communities globally. Working-class finds it an affordable choice, youngsters love the flavors and so on.

To make this popular option easily available, less time consuming and affordable, pizza entered the frozen food industry. However, frozen pizza has direct effects on health by disturbing the blood pressure, trans fat clogging the arteries, disturbing body’s cholesterol levels and many more. Secondly, labeling issues among companies in this industry can cause health impacts. A leading company in this sector had labelling error that had an undeclared Allergan. Despite not having any direct impact, these have to potential to cause direct health impacts.  This causes a serious threat to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 3 (Good Health and wellbeing).

Chlorofluorocarbons released by freezing equipment is the biggest threat to ozone layer creating a climate chaos globally. In addition, the procedure of making frozen pizza requires a huge amount of energy which makes it difficult to even think of making this industry eco-friendly. Last but not the least packaging used to keep the frozen pizza intact is nothing but plastic which sits in the landfill for years polluting the soil, water, and air.

All the above-mentioned harmful effects push away the achievement of SDGs. It can be easily seen that more than one SDGs are at stake if this industry keeps growing. A magnifying glass approach tells us that frozen pizza can be one of the big reasons behind delayed achievement of- SDG 3 (Good Health and wellbeing), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life above land).

ESG Trends

Much research has been conducted in this area to bring Energy Plus Models. This research is closely studying the data around energy use and environmental conditions. While consumers are demanding increased sustainability on such products to know when and how ingredients in their products created/sourced, certain sustainable brands within ESG are have come up with solutions like “climate-conscious” pizza. A German-based food supplier has developed climate-conscious pizza with a sustainability score on its package, that talks about CO2 emissions coming from the product, animal welfare, water used for making the product, and credentials supporting rainforest protection. While this increases transparency and sustainability of the product, it also demonstrates the climate-consciousness of plant-based and vegan diets. However, despite being developed through sustainable methods like vertical farming and precision agriculture, these products generate significant waste through packaging. Companies in this industry follow a premium pricing strategy which decreases the affordability of these products by preventing companies from achieving UNSDG 10: Reduced inequalities.

Growth Of Frozen Pizza Market

The global frozen pizza market size was valued at USD 19.6 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2% from 2020 to 2027. While there are sustainable benefits delivered by these products, the fragility of frozen food makes it even more difficult to make changes in choice of packaging material due to which there is scope for improving sustainability in this market.
